In biblical times, jars were cheap, fragile containers for storing things—everything from garbage to gold; it was never about the jar, but rather what it held inside.
We are told in this chapter that we are like jars of clay, and that we carry around a treasure of great worth. As Christians, the treasure we hold is the gospel of Jesus Christ, that God came to earth as a man who lived a perfect life, died on the cross to save us from our sins, rose from the grave, ascended into heaven, and will return to give us eternal life. God uses frail sinners like you and me to put Christ on display.
So what are we to do with this treasure? Should we hide it for safe-keeping? No way, sister! Luke 8:16 says, “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.” Jesus is that light, that treasure we possess, and we should be sharing it so that grace may reach others—for God’s glory, and not ours. We read, furthermore, in 1 Peter 3:15: “…always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”
